I have just begun to read Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen for the second time, and the second time through it hasn't lost anything. I would highly recommend it because of its compelling plot line and the unique writing style. It is the author's memoir of her time in McLean psychiatric hospital in the late 1960's. She was only 18 when she was committed, and she often resented being kept there, when her doctor had only saw her for 15 minutes before locking her up for two years.
One remarkable aspect of this book is the way in which the author creates an extremely realistic "alternate world" in the hospital, which was, to the patients, completely distinct from the real world. All of the characters are interesting for their own reasons, and together they are compiled into a dysfunctional family, of sorts. It is written in a compellingly honest and frank manner that truly captures what it was like for her, and is often surprisingly funny. It is the balance between comedy and seriousness, and sanity and insanity that sets this book apart from many others. It has a powerful statement on society without rubbing it in your face, and it deals with very disturbing and shocking subject without being overwhelming. This book is often compared to One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, because it raises the question about who are the crazy ones, and blurs the distinction between what is in their heads and what is reality. Overall, this is definitely one of the best books i have read recently, and I will probably end up reading it again sometime.
