Currently I am reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, which is the book that i signed up to read for this class. Although I have only read the first five chapters I already find it extremely engaging and enjoyable. It is about Mariam, the illegitimate daughter of a rich man with many wives who lives in the city. She is excluded to living with her bitter mother on the outskirts of town, with only one visit each week from her father. In her innocence of childhood she overlooks the truth that he is ashamed of her and that she will never be his true daughter and instead she idolizes him, dreaming of the days that she will be able to live with him and spend all of her time with him.
So far it is not in any way a cheerful or lighthearted read, but I hope that this has some breaks at least, to keep it from getting too depressing. I like that this book focuses on a character that i usually completely overlooked. She is unimportant to even her own father and generally insignificant, but this book makes her struggles relatable and even important.
I have also read The Kite Runner by khaled Hosseini and this seems similar in topic and themes, but I like how this book gives a different perspective on relatively the same time period and events.
